Cost a recipe directly from package prices
Enter the package size, package price, and amount your recipe actually uses. You do not need to calculate a price per pound or ounce first.
How to calculate recipe cost
Cost each ingredient from the package you actually buy. The calculator converts the amount used into the same measurement dimension as the package and applies that fraction to the package price.
Ingredient cost used = package price × amount used ÷ package amount
Total recipe cost = sum of ingredient costs used
Calculations remain exact internally. Ingredient contributions are not rounded to cents before the recipe total is added.
How to calculate cost per serving
Once the total ingredient cost is known, divide it by the number of servings the recipe makes.
Cost per serving = total recipe cost ÷ number of servings
Example: cost a recipe from package prices
Suppose you buy 2 lb of an ingredient for$7.98, use 6 oz in a recipe, and the recipe makes 4 servings.
- 6 oz is 6/32 of the 2 lb package.
- Exact ingredient cost used: $7.98 × 6 ÷ 32.
- Total recipe cost displayed: $1.50.
- Cost per serving displayed: $0.37.
The displayed cents are rounded only at the money display boundary; the exact fractional value is retained for downstream calculation.
Why package price is easier than calculating unit price first
Many costing spreadsheets make you first calculate a value such as dollars per pound or dollars per ounce. This calculator accepts the purchase relationship directly: for example, 2 lb for $7.98 and6 oz used.
It supports lb, oz, U.S. fluid ounces, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, metric mass and volume, and count. Compatible units can be mixed within the same dimension.
Mass and volume are never converted into each other automatically. A pound-to-cup conversion would require an ingredient-specific density, so the calculator does not guess one.
Recipe cost vs. food cost percentage
Recipe cost answers how much the tracked ingredients cost. Food cost percentage compares the ingredient cost per serving with the selling or menu price.
Once you know the serving cost, continue to thefood cost calculator to check a menu price or calculate a target price.
What happens when ingredient prices change?
A one-off calculator is useful for one recipe. The repeated work appears when the same ingredient is used across many recipes and its purchase price changes.
RecipeGain is designed for that recurring costing workflow: reusable ingredients and recipes, with price changes reflected in connected recipe calculations where supported by the accepted product release.
When a free calculator is enough — and when a costing app helps
A free calculator is enough when
- you need to cost one recipe occasionally;
- you are testing a new item or price;
- you do not need a reusable recipe library.
A recurring workflow helps when
- the same ingredients appear in many recipes;
- purchase prices change regularly;
- you repeatedly review recipe cost and selling price.
What this calculator includes
The free web calculator tracks ingredient purchase cost only. It does not automatically add labor, packaging, energy, rent, payment fees, or other overhead. Those costs should not be inferred from the ingredient result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost of a recipe?
Calculate the cost of the amount used for every ingredient, add those ingredient costs, then divide by servings if you need a per-serving result.
Do I need to calculate cost per ounce or pound first?
No. Enter the package size, package price, and amount used. The exact unit conversion is handled by the calculator.
Can I use cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons?
Yes, for volume-to-volume calculations. The calculator also supports U.S. fluid ounces, mL, and liters. It does not convert mass to volume without a known density.
Does recipe cost include labor, packaging, and overhead?
Not in this free calculator. Its tracked cost is ingredient purchase cost only, so the result is not your full business cost.
What is the difference between recipe cost and food cost percentage?
Recipe cost builds the ingredient cost of a batch or serving. Food cost percentage compares serving ingredient cost with selling price.
